I’m the director of career services at a tech school. You’d probably know this if you’ve seen any of my posts about my wild-n-crazy coworkers, including !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Well, today I said something that the wrong person overheard.
Our admissions representatives have a tough, thankless job. They often get stuck working weekends and holidays. I personally disagree with making them work these days. The company line is they need to have as many opportunities as possible to line up appointments with prospective students, but really nothing much happens on these days except making admissions representatives hate their jobs.
We’re on a break from classes right now, but a student, a somewhat crazy older guy who I enjoy BS’ing with from time to time, was here to check on his upcoming schedule. He started chatting with me and somehow the topic of working over Labor Day weekend came up. I mentioned that I won’t be around, but some of the admissions reps will. He was surprised, because why should they have to work on Labor Day? Then I blurted out, “sucks to be them!”
So of course, no sooner than I say this, does the admissions manager (my peer and the reps’ boss) come walking around the corner, all like, “SUCKS TO BE THEM ???” and I had to backpedal and give the student the company-line, kool-aid drinking explanation of why the reps are supposed to be here.
I don’t really care though, because this guy (the coworker, not the student) is kool-aid drinker #1, takes life way too seriously, is responsible for my no longer being able to wear sneakers on casual days, and is the enemy of all fun.
They still shouldn’t have to work weekends and holidays. Because it does suck to be them!

That really sucks to be them.

If the rule is no sneakers on casual day you need to escalate. Either flip flops or shorts with the classiest wing tips you’ve got and super fancy socks.
/I’m a bad influence on people.
/they say stick to what you're good at.

It used to be fine to wear sneakers on casual days. But this guy, he came in several months ago and made changes, in the name of giving prospective students “the Lexus treatment” when they come check out the school. Which apparently you can’t do if you’re wearing sneakers. So he told the admissions people they can’t wear sneakers anymore.
Nobody said anything about this to me, and I kept on wearing sneakers same as always. But one Friday, I went back into that part of the office for some reason, and first he says “nice sneakers,” to which I responded “thank you.” Then he goes, “is that the message we’re sending?” My response was that I like sneakers, and it’s always been fine with my boss to wear sneakers on casual days, so that’s what I’m doing until someone tells me otherwise. Later that day one of the admissions reps came to me and told me about how they’re not allowed to wear sneakers anymore.
This manager dude commented to me on my sneakers a few more times, and every time I basically said my boss has always been fine with sneakers. I even brought it up with my boss that this dude keeps grumbling about my sneakers to me, and she said not to worry about it.
We’re casual this and next week while there are no classes. My boss sent out her usual “it’s ok to go casual until classes resume,” email, but this time she specified that no sneakers were allowed. I’m quite sure this was done to avoid a double standard where only some people are allowed to wear sneakers.
So today, I wore my black leather chucks that are one of several pairs of “looks kinda sorta like work shoes” sneakers that I own. I wear them on non-casual days all the time, so they’re good enough for a casual day too. Fuck that guy.
